Easy load/convert on Win7 64 bit,
We upgraded from a crashed Dell with Win XP to a new HP with Win7 64 bit. We had been running Act 6.0 for years for my wife’s small business, but it won’t load in 64 bit OSs. So, we bought Act2011 Pro despite the bad reviews here, since there was a 30 day trial period. We never had any version of Act on the new computer previously, and we did have Office 2003 loaded first. Our DB was backed up on an external drive. The load was absolutely smooth from the DVD. It took about 15 min mostly loading SQL server 2008 related files. Then we converted our old DB by simply trying to open it and answering a few questions. We did have redefined user fields in our old DB and were concerned with possibly losing them. No worry, everything converted to the new DB fine. Upon opening the “contact” view we noticed our user fields were not there. It took a few minutes to realize they were shown in the lower half of the screen as “user fields.” The data was correct but the field names were lost. It just took a few minutes to go to “tools – design layouts” and rename our user fields and move them to the main Contact view. At the same time we could drag and drop all fields to really highlight the fields important to us and remove unwanted clutter.
In all fairness, we haven’t tried fancy syncing to mobile devices or even other computers. We never needed to call customer support. All I can say so far is the load was easy, the conversion perfect, and the new layout design tools are easy and versatile. We haven’t linked to Office, but our Office applications work without interference after the installation. I would suggest anyone considering installing this read the white paper on installing available at the Act site, where different concerns are listed for different OSs. It appears Act still struggles a little being a 32 bit app in a 64 bit environment, but that has caused us no problem. By all means, as with any project you invest a lot of time in, keep an offline backup at all times! My only minor complaint is sparse documentation – we found layout design tools by roaming through tools, but in fairness we lacked patience and didn’t go through all the tutorial info and videos available first. (Reviews here would have been more helpful to us if people would list the environment they were working in.)
